Non-communicable diseases on the rise

Non-communicable disease has emerged as one the main killers in the country.

According to hospital records, six out of 10 hospital deaths were caused by non-communicable diseases in 2008.

Bhutan also has one of the highest death rates from non communicable diseases in South East Asia.

Non-communicable diseases are caused mainly by poor lifestyle including lack of physical exercise, unhealthy diet, and excessive use of alcohol and tobacco, and are largely preventable.

The four most common non-communicable diseases are cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, cancers and diabetes.
