Gelephu Gup candidate files complaint

Jun 29, 2011

A Gup candidate in Gelephu Geog, Ugyen Wangchuk, has filed a written complaint against a supporter of the Gup elect Tashi accusing him of violating the electoral law.

The complaint has been lodged against Phub Tenzin.

According to the complainant, Ugyen Wangchuk, “all the voters were bribed on the poll day with beer in nearby shops which is prohibited by electoral law. Phub Tenzin is an active supporter of gup elect. He was diverting the voters and luring the people who had come to vote.”

Ugyen Wangchuk reported the case to the election officials in Gelephu. He said he was asked to resolve the issue internally. When he refused to do so, he was asked to file a petition with the dungkhag court. The dungkhag court, he said, did not accept his petition as election disputes have to be dealt by the dzongkhag court. The case has been forwarded to the dzongkhag court.

Officials from the dzongkhag election dispute settlement body in Gelephu said the law does not permit them to accept cases after the election.

BBS tried to contact Phub Tenzin several times but failed because his mobile phone was switched off.
