ECB geared up for Local Elections

The Election Commission of Bhutan (ECB) is ready to conduct first Local Government Elections on  June 27, 2011. The election will be conducted in the 205 Geogs of 20 Dzongkhags.

Returning officers, Polling officers, and Security officials have arrived in their respective polling stations.

On the Poll day voters will vote for three local leaders, Gup, Mangmi and Tshogpa.

Gup is the Head of the Geog, and Mangmi serve as a Deputy Head and Tshogpa as the Head of Chiwog.

“The local leaders will serve as a bridge between local and central governance,” the Deputy Chief Election Officer, Phub Dorji explains, “these leaders will help to fulfill the development needs of the voters in their respective Geog.”

The Gup, Mangmi and Tshogpa form Geog Tshogde- the decision making body at the grassroots level. The body will discuss on matters concerning development works of geog and submit to Dzongkhag Tshogdu, the decision making body at the district level.
