Inadequate dialysis machines hinder medical care

dialysisWith increasing number of patients with kidney failure and limited number of dialysis machines, the National Referral Hospital in Thimphu is facing difficulty in providing adequate treatment.

Patients with kidney failure require two sessions of dialysis a week.

The hospital today has eight dialysis machines in operation. However, with the increase in the number of patients doctors said it was difficult to provide adequate treatment. The machine is used as a replacement for dysfunctional kidney.

Doctor Tashi Wangdi said a patient has to undergo at least eight hours of dialysis session a week. Just eight-dialysis machine is not enough to cater to 100 patients who are currently undergoing dialysis session at the hospital, he said.

Doctors at the hospital added that without adequate treatment, patients find it difficult in their day-to-day affairs since toxins cannot be removed from the body.

The department of medical services however said that patients receive adequate treatment. There are 4 dialysis machines in Monggar and three in Gelegphu.
