OAG submits appeal petitions against Lhakhang Karpo verdict

OAG submits appeal petitions against Lhakhang Karpo verdictThe Office of the Attorney General (OAG) submitted their appeal petitions against Haa District Court’s judgement on the acquittal of foreign minister and project manager in Lhakhang Karpo case, today.

The OAG however will hand over the case to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) once it reaches the High Court.

Attorney General, Shera Lhendup said the conflict of interest will be best avoided if the prosecution is continued by the ACC because of the involvement of a minister. The Attorney General is a political appointee.

Haa District Court had acquitted the foreign minister Rinzin Dorje on June 23. He was charged with abuse of functions and embezzlement of public property as the former Haa Dzongdag.

The district court had also acquitted project manager for Lhakhang Karpo’s renovation, Wangchuk Tshering. The court could not establish that he had ‘criminal intent’ to embezzle funds.

The OAG is also appealing against the judgement passed on Project Engineer, Tashi Gyeltshen, for considering Nu 100,000 as security deposit for un-sieved sand.

Haa court has already sentenced him to two years six months for accepting a Samsung Galaxy phone as bribe and forgery.
