Finance Minister questioned on Rupee shortage Member of Parliament, Wamrong MP, Karma Tenzin questioned the government on the measures taken to ease Rupee shortage in the country.

In today’s National Assembly’s question and answer session, the MP said Bhutanese shoppers are being charged six percent extra in shops across the border, if they cannot pay in Indian Rupees, since 2012. “This has devalued Ngultrum.”

The finance minister, Namgay Dorji said the government is taking measures, both short and long term basis, to ease rupee shortage.

He said the ministry is working with some of the ministries and working for further promotion of export.

Lyonpo said that even though the rupee shortage is still a challenge for the government, the situation has improved compared to 2012. He said there was a need for collective effort from the government, private sector and people to tackle Rupee shortage.
