May 27, 2011

A group calling themselves the Bhutan United Democratic Front is suspected to be behind the two improvised explosive devices which exploded in the bordering town of Phuentsholing and Gelephu recently.

The group is affiliated to another outfit known as the United Revolutionary Front of Bhutan.

The Home and Cultural Affairs Minister Lyonpo Minjur Dorji said the improvised explosive devices were planted most probably to disrupt the Local Government Elections.

“To prevent such incidents from occurring again we have placed security everywhere,” he said.

The explosion in Gelephu town occurred at around 9:45 pm on May 22. The devise was planted in a plastic dustbin near the Losel Cinema Hall.

In Phuentsholing, the explosion occurred about two hours earlier in the Zangdopelri lhakhang area. The device was planted in a metal dustbin.
