Chamkhar razed by fire yet again

May 27, 2011

The Bumthang Chamkhar town has nearly been wiped out in another major fire early this morning.

The fire, the third in seven months, razed 33 houses to the ground. Eight of the houses were only recently constructed as part of the reconstruction of the town after the two earlier fires.

Most residents said the fire could have only been set deliberately. They said it is not possible for the town to be engulfed by fire three times within a short span of time.

The fire started at around 3.30 am from near a shop selling religious texts.

A shopkeeper reported seeing another fire at around 2:20 am nearby a shop which deals in shoes. He managed to douse the fire.

This has added to the speculation that the fire was started deliberately. Residents are also asking for additional fire fighting trucks.

The fire fighters struggled with the single fire fighting truck to bring the fire under control.

Meanwhile, the district administration officials and the Gyalpoi Zimpon’s office are building temporary shelters for those affected.
