Chickens infected with bird flu culled in Motithang

Chickens infected with bird flu culled in Motithang-(Update): The National Centre for Animal Health culled chickens in Motithang, Thimphu, after the samples sent to India for Avian Influenza H5N1 virus tested positive.

The sample testing was sent to the National Institute of High Security Disease Laboratory at Bopal, India, for confirmatory testing, which is an international protocol.

The initial testing within the country had turned out to be positive.

The sample testing was carried out after a suspected outbreak of Avian Influenza H5N1 virus in a colony in Motithang, last week. Of the 32 chicken reared by six households, 16 had died.

From April 8 onwards, the Department of Livestock along with Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority have put in place disease containment activities.
