PM concludes Sri Lanka visitThe Prime Minister, Tshering Tobgay is back in the country after a three-day visit to Sri Lanka. Lyonchhen was on an official visit to Sri Lanka on the invitation of Sri Lanka’s President, Maithripala Sirisena.

Lyonchhen held a bilateral meeting with the President of Sri Lanka. A release from the foreign minister says the two leaders discussed ways to further strengthen cooperation, particularly in education, health and aviation, amongst others.

Lyonchhen also spoke about Bhutan’s peaceful and smooth transition to democracy.

Following the meeting, Lyonchhen and the President witnessed signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on bilateral consultations between the two countries. Foreign secretaries of the two countries signed the MoU.

The MoU provides a mechanism for structured dialogue between the two countries to further promote relations.

The Vice-Chancellors and Deans of the Universities of Colombo, and the Kotelawala Defence University, which are host to Bhutanese students, also called on the Prime Minister.

Lyonchhen visited Mahabodhi Temple in Anuradhapura to receive a sapling of the Mahabodhi Tree as a gift of the Government and People of Sri Lanka to His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo on the occasion of His Majesty’s 60th Birth Anniversary.

Lyonchhen also met Bhutanese students in Colombo and Peradeniya.

Lyonchhen was accompanied by the Minister of Education and other senior Government officials.
