Disagreement compromise school relocation

May 24, 2011

The Nahi primary school is located at the base of a mountain and near a fast flowing stream. It is risky for the students. The school has to be relocated but where. Yusa-gom or Pelrigang?

The inhabitants of Yusa-gom and Nabi villages want the school to be relocated at Yusa-gom, in their area. The people of Hebesa and Kujula want the school in Pelrigang. Both have strong arguments.

Hebesa and Khujula residents argue that since the geog office and the agriculture extension office are located on their side, the school also should be constructed there.

The people of Yusa-gom and Nabi said the majority of the students studying in the school are from their villages and therefore the school should be relocated in their area.

The schools relocation was planned and a budget of over Nu.40 million approved several years ago. The money could not be utilized as the people remained divided on the relocation.

The Assistant Dzongkhag Education officer Pema Wangchuk said the money will now be used to construct a kitchen, a store and a principal’s residence in the present location. The remaining money will be used for other schools.

The people are now concerned about the safety of their children.

Tshering Wangchuk, a parent, said “since the school is located near the river, it is risky for the children. There is also risk of mudslides from the mountain behind.”

Phub Dorji, another parent said apart from the risks, “the students cannot concentrate in the class due to the noise from the river.”

The school’s principal also agrees that the present location is not suitable.

The villagers have failed to come to an agreement and it t is likely the students will pay the price.
