The 7th session of the parliament begins

The 7th session of the parliament began amidst traditional ceremonies. Addressing the opening, His Majesty said commended the government for working tirelessly in service of the nation.

Highlighting the socio-economic progress under the democratically elected government, His Majesty said “remote villages are being connected with roads and electricity is being made accessible to villages while education and health facilities are being broadened or improved.”

“Our traditions and cultural values continue to be strengthened and lhakangs are being renovated. The government has moved with intensified efforts to renew foreign relations according to the changing times.”

His Majesty said the immediate and foremost duty is the success of democracy. “Democracy can only flourish if all Bhutanese uphold the rule of law; if there is good governance; if corruption is eradicated and if the delivery of public services is fair and effective.”

The month-long parliament session will discuss 12 bills including three new bills. They are the Bhutan Institute of Medical Sciences Bill, Child Adoption Bill and the Consumer Protection Bill. It will also discuss various issues regarding the socio-economic progress of the country.
