No more living in darkness, says Silambi residents

Light-Silambi“Our era of living in darkness is over.” That is what the residents of remote Silambi Gewog in Monggar say. Their homes were electrified last year. And most of the households have started using electrical appliances. As their homes were electrified last year, people have started using electrical appliances as well.

The arrival of electricity has generated a lot of excitement, according to our reporter, Kuenga Tashi.

Dorji Wangchuk, a village Tshogpa, said electrification has come as a boon to the villagers. “We are really happy,” he said with a smile on his face.Light-Silambi-

Some of the people who could not afford to buy electrical appliances have sought help from their sons and daughters living in towns.

The villagers said apart from improving the quality of life it has also helped boost their economy. They said they could now work productively after sunset. The villagers are seen weaving cane and bamboo products at night as well.

“It is better now,” said Rinzin Tshomo. “Earlier it was difficult to work. Now, with the electricity we can sleep and work whenever we like.”

Not everything is over in their wish list. They have one more thing- a motorable road to their Gewog in the near future.
