Wild elephant tramples and kills 14-year-old

May 17, 2011

A 14-year-old boy has died after he was trampled by a wild elephant in Hangay Kalamati in Sibsu, Samtse. He died of severe head injuries at the Samtse hospital.

He was trying to chase away the wild elephant with his grandfather from their maize field on Sunday. The elephant suddenly turned back and attacked them. His grandfather managed to ran away but he could not.

He was immediately taken to the Sibsu Hospital from where he was referred to Samtse Hospital.

Last year a 54-year-old man died in a similar incident.

This is common scenario in Sipsu. Farmers stay awake over the night to chase away the elephants from their fields and putting their own life at risk without proper and effective support from anywhere. Some solutions were in place from government but with no actual impact.
It is always loose-loose situation for farmers; sacrificing sleep, loosing crops and most importantly risking their lives. Many houses had been destroyed every single night and people are really vulnerable. We would like to appeal to concerned agencies or authorities to take the issue seriously and help poor farmers.
