Monggar Gewog readying for bye-election

Monggar-Bye-ElectionMonggar Gewog is gearing towards bye-election for the post of gup. The post was rendered empty after the former gup passed away in a car accident, earlier this month.

The village zomdus completed today. Three candidates have been nominated. They will have to file in their nominations by February 1.

Election Act of Bhutan says the Election Commission shall, when the seat of a member elected becomes vacant on death or resignation, call for bye-election within the 30 days from the date of vacancy.

The Election Commission had issued a notification calling for bye-election on January 23.

However, the response has been poor.

“As of now we have not received a single application for postal ballots,” said the Dzongkhag Election Officer, Sangay Dorji.

The election campaign will kick-off from February 2. It will end on February 15, 48 hours before the poll day starts.
The poll day is scheduled to be February17.
