Sonam Tshering awaits his fate

Sonam Tshering, the first man to be sentenced under the controversial tobacco act will know his fate soon.

He has been sentenced to three years in prison for smuggling tobacco by the Thimphu District Court. He appealed to the High Court. The verdict is due soon. The High Court held the final hearing yesterday.

Sonam Tshering was found in possession of chewing tobacco worth Nu.120 at the Chunzom checkpoint in January. He admitted that he bought the tobacco products from a shop in Jaigaon, a border town in India. Though he identified the source, he was sentenced for smuggling because the source is in India and cannot be apprehended.
