His Majesty launches the National Reading Year

HM-NationalReadingYearHis Majesty the King launched the National Reading Year and granted audience and Tokha to over 9,000 students and over 1,000 teachers of Paro and Thimphu Dzongkhags at the Tendrel Thang today. His Majesty was accompanied by Her Majesty the Gyaltsuen.

The National Reading Year is to commemorate the 60th Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the fourth Druk Gyalpo.

A Tokha lunch was also served to the students and teachers. Various cultural programmes were also showcased.


The highlight of the programme was a uniquely synchronised drill showcased by the Royal Bhutan Police.

The choreographer of the drill, Major Sissir Chettri said they learned the drill through internet and YouTube. He said it is a hybrid form of drill where moves are accompanied by music requiring strength, flexibility, artistry and precise timing among other disciplines.

Of the 100 participants, 28 were female constables.

Books were also distributed to the students to inculcate the reading habits among the students.
