Bhutan observes the World Soil Day

WorldSoilDay- Bhutan joined the world to observe the World Soil Day, today.

During the event at Wangsisna in Thimphu, the Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, Tenzin Dhendup launched the National Action Programme Document. The book will guide the country for next 10 years to combat land degradation in the country.WorldSoilDay

“Due to increase in the population and development activities like roads, buildings and other infrastructures, soil degradation is taking place.” The Secretary said deforestation is also taking place rapidly. “The soil needs to be looked after so that we do not suffer from landslide, flood or other natural calamities.”

A Specialist from the Soil and Plant Analytical Laboratory in Simotakha, Jamyang says the policy makers and land users have to pay attention. “Many days are celebrated in the name UN but the question is, are we really serious, this time, about the soil protection?”

The 69th UN General Assembly declared December 5 as the World Soil Day.
