PM questioned on economy

PM questioned on economy,The Nganglam MP, Choida Jamtsho questioned the Prime Minister if the previous government would be given the credit for the project increase in of 15 percent GDP for 2017-18.

In the National Assembly today, MP Choida Jamtsho said the projected increase would be because of hydropower projects initiated and undertaken by Druk Phuensum Tshogpa, when in power.

He also said the country achieved an average GDP of 6.35 percent in the past six years. Despite, the steady growth, MP Choida Jamtsho said, the previous government has been blamed for slowing down the economic growth.

The Prime Minister, Tshering Tobgay said Punatshangchhu Hydropower Project I was initiated way before democracy was instituted.


Lyonchhen also added the projects initiated by the past government had their own share of challenges which delayed the completion of project within stipulated time frame.

North Thimphu’s MP, Kinga Tshering also raised the question regarding the slow economic growth. “Will the government be able to achieve the growth as projected in the budget presentation this year?” The GDP was project to be 6.8 percent.

The Prime Minister said people have now access to credit through Economic Stimulus Plan and that the government is optimistic it would boost the economy. Lyonchhen added a working committee has been formed to study past problems and way forward for better economic growth.

Panbang MP, Dorji Wangdi said Bhutan would be among the fourth fastest growing economy if the previous government had come to power.
