Windstorm renders hundreds of homes roofless

Apr 15, 2011

More than 1,400 houses in 10 dzongkhags have been damaged by the recent windstorm according to a preliminary report. Most of the houses lost their roof. In few instances, the windstorm also reportedly caused structural damage.

The windstorm blew away the roofs of houses, lhakhangs, Gup’s offices, schools, basic health units and outreach clinics, renewable natural resource offices and non formal education centres.

Speaking at a news conference this afternoon, the Home and Cultural Affairs Minister Lyonpo Minjur Dorji said most of the dzongkhag staff are already in the field to assess the damages. He said even though the figure is high, there is no need to panic because in most cases the damages are partial with the windstorm blowing away the CGI roofing.

“Only a few have been badly affected,” he said.

The windstorm has also left three children injured. One was hit by a floating CGI sheet in Pemagatshel. The other two were injured by lightning caused apparently by the windstorm in Tsirang.

The windstorm also uprooted trees and disrupted power supply in some of the affected places.
