Allow voters to vote from their place of residence: DNT

DNT-AbsenteesDruk Nyamrup Tshogpa (DNT) says there is a need to introduce unrestricted absentee in person voting, instead of postal ballot. The party, during a press conference yesterday, said the system would allow the voters to vote from their place of residence.

DNT had put up the recommendation to the Legislative Committee of the National Assembly. The committee is currently reviewing the Election Act. The Election Act will be tabled for discussion in the upcoming session of National Assembly.

Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa says low voter turnout during elections is a serious concern in democracy.  They say to prevent a non-inclusive government, where less than 50 percent voters determine the election results, voters should be allowed to vote from their place of residence.

Their research paper also says allowing people to vote from their dzongkhag of residence will bring down the cost of elections.

DNT says postal ballots are expensive with high rate of rejection and are subject to manipulation.

DNT took them more than three months to compile their findings.
