Awards to retain and reward professionals

EngAward-Shortage of Engineers, Architects, Urban Planners in the country is a longstanding story. In an effort to retain these professionals, the Ministry of Works and Human Settlement introduced an award system, to recognise and reward the professionals.

The first of the award was initiated as the three day National Engineering and Architects Conference ended in Thimphu on Friday. Two masons and two institutes were the recipients of the awards.

Dechen Wangmo, 23, who works as a mason in Tsirang was one of the recipients for her expertise in the construction of buildings in the last 7 years.

Pema Dorji, another mason from Trashigang was recognised for his skills in wood works. In a fast urbanising Bhutan, traditional masons are seen in short supply and are becoming dissociated from the modern concrete dominated constructions. Pema Dorji, was therefore recognised for his efforts in keeping traditional masonry skills alive.


The Samdrup Jongkhar Initiative, a project founded by His Eminence Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche was recognised as a potential model for the country to raise the living standards in Samdrup Jongkhar and beyond. The Samdrup Jongkhar Initiative in particular was rewarded for its initiatives in solid waste management in Wooling and Dewathang community. Their idea of Zero Waste involving communities was also appreciated.

Tshewang Dendup, the Executive Director of SJ Initiative received the certificate of appreciation.

The last and the fourth award went to the School Planning and Building Division for their efforts in looking after the repairs and maintenance works of educational facilities in the country.

Karma Sonam, the Chief Engineer of the Division, received the certificate of appreciation for all the contributions made in the field of constructions.

Along with the certificates, the individuals and the institutes were given attractive cash prizes.
