Proposed mining site in Monggar draws ire of local residents

HeatedDebate-Mining-Monggar- Heated words were exchanged during a public consultation meeting to establish mining site in Monggar. The proposed site is at Rokshaphung under Chagsakhar Gewog.

Some said they will not allow the proposal to get through because of the gup’s involvement.

Others say they are worried, the pollution from the mining, will affect their crops and vegetables.

The Chagsakhar Gup, Pedma Dorji, said he was investigated by the relevant agencies like Anti-Corruption Commission and Prime Minister’s Office over his alleged involvement.

The villagers say they even suspect Dzongkhag officials of manipulating the public clearance. They say their signatures for attending the last consultation meeting would be taken as clearance from the public.

The Monggar Dzongda, Sherab Tenzin, said the signatures wouldn’t be taken as clearance. He said it is signature of presence for the consultation meeting just as required by the Public Consultation Guideline. The Dzongda said everything is being done within the required laws, rules and guidelines.

But, there are also villagers who support the proposal. They say it would bring about economic benefits.
