Monk sentenced for involuntary manslaughter

Mar 31, 2011

The Thimphu district court has sentenced a 17-year-old monk to 18 months in prison for involuntary manslaughter. He would have received three years but his sentence was reduced because he is a minor.

The district court also sentenced five other monks to one year eight months in prison and two other men, a former monk and a student to ten months in prison. They were all involved in a fight in a Drayang in Thimphu in September last year.

Following the fight, they caught up with the victim near Dechenphodrang. In the fight which ensued, the victim and two of the attackers toppled down a steep slope. The group rescued their friends and left.

The victim who was seriously injured was discovered only 17 hours later. He died later in the intensive care unit of the national referral hospital.
