PM accepts petition on stricter laws against sexual materials distribution

PM-NamgayZam-non-consensual distribution of sexual materialsThe Prime Minister, Tshering Tobgay accepted the petition on specific and strict laws against the non-consensual distribution of sexual materials, yesterday. Lyonchhen said people can now expect penalties against the non-consensual distribution of sexual materials to be lot more severe.

An independent journalist, Namgay Zam had initiated the petition. Over 2,000 people had signed the online petition.

Lyonchhen said the government is already looking into the issue. He said there is a provision in the Bhutan InfoComm and Media Authority (BICMA) Act is quite lenient. Lyonchhen said the Act was drafted or approved by the parliament as it was not considered this to be a potential issue, then.

The Prime Minister said, the government will take this seriously and amend the BICMA Act.
