Bhutan gets it first eye bank

NationalEyeBank-. The first-ever eye bank in the country opened yesterday. Her Royal Highness Ashi Kesang Wangmo Wangchuck inaugurated the National Eye Bank at the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital in Thimphu.

The event was to mark the World Sight Day, yesterday.

The doctors say corneal blindness is one of the leading causes of blindness in Bhutan.


The Medical Director from Tilganga institute of Ophthalmology in Nepal, Dr. Ruit was also present during the inaugural.

Upon the invitation of Her Majesty the Royal Grandmother Ashi Kesang Choeden Wangchuck, Dr. Ruit has been conducting cataract surgeries for many Bhutanese since 2005.

Every year, the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology will donate two to three corneas to the National Eye Bank.

Today, over 250 cornea blindness cases are registered with the hospital.
