Road widening damages water pipes in Simtokha

Roadwidening-Waterpipe-- The ongoing road widening from Simtokha in Thimphu to Dochula has damaged water pipes that supplies water to more than 50 households in Simtokha.

The Tshogpa of the area, Yangdon, 40, has to walk a few kilometres, and at least five times a day to fix the pipes. “I wish the Department of Roads would be little cautious when they work.” She said

She says it is the boulders that need to be rolled away from the site, which damages the water pipes every time.

They have even taken the matter to the officials concerned.

“Nothing can be done about the boulders,” said the Department of Roads’ Executive Engineer, DP Subba. However, he said they will repair the water pipes as a temporary measure within a week.

Once the road widening is complete, the Department of Roads will take ownership to bring back water supply to normalcy, says DP Subba.

The problem for the locals does not end there. They say their tenants are threatening to move out given the water shortage.
