Paro College of Education accommodates less than half of its students

ParoNIE-accommodationThe Paro College of Education’s hostel is only able to accommodate less than a half of its students. Of the 900, more than 500 students rent private apartments, which is difficult to come by.

There are five buildings under the institution which houses boarding facilities. The hostel rooms can accommodate only around 450 people- many of them high school graduates with some in-service teachers.

The Hostel Warden, Chimi Rinzin, says the institution gives preference to new students. “We give the first preference of the rooms to the first year students because some of them have not even been to Paro. If we ask them to live outside campus, it will be difficult for them”

The hostel rooms are also small and four people occupy each room.

As a result, majority of the students are compelled to stay outside on rent. Many say finding good and affordable home is hard.

The Dean of Student Affairs, Kesang Tshering, says the college is planning to construct additional blocks and is also looking at proposals from private parties who want to construct private hostels for their students.

“We might increase the capacity of the hostel by constructing additional hostels but not really try to accommodate all the students because we want to encourage the private parties to also take up business in this line”

Paro College of Education was first established in 1975
