Works underway to install Bhutan’s first renewable energy

Windmill-Power-GenerationWorks to install Bhutan’s first ever renewable energy is underway in Wangdue Phodrang. Once complete in 2016, the windmills will act as an alternative source for energy.

Hydropower is the single source of energy for Bhutan, as of now.

The work for the pilot project began in September. The soil, dug from the ground has already been sent for geological testing, to study the ground stability.

A Japanese company selected for the project, is expected to send their experts to Bhutan following the results.

To identify grounds for the project, the Department of Renewable Energy under the economic affairs ministry, conducted a feasibility study, collecting information on wind data, from Tsimasham in Chhukha, Chelela in Paro and Rubesa in Wangdue Phodrang.

If technically feasible, the Department of Renewable Energy has plans to install more windmills not just in Rubesa, but in other parts of the country as well.
