Monggar Police have arrested over 40 people in connection with chorten vandalism in the last four months. They are suspected to be behind the vandalism of over 30 chortens in the East.
They are said to have vandalised more chortens in Zhemgang, Bumthang, Trongsa, Monggar, Trashigang, Trashi Yangtse and Pema Gatshel.
As the police continue crackdowns on chorten vandalism, people of Monggar Gewog say they have tried to do their bit to safe guard chortens in their villages.
Led by the Gup, the villager once tried to guard the chortens in the gewog.

“We guarded it like we guard our crops from wild animals. Some of us even spent nights on the trees guarding the chortens,” said the Monggar Gup, Dechen Yeshey.
They are hoping that the police crackdown would save the remaining chortens.
Chorten vandalism is being reported in other parts of the country as well.
