Home Minister speaks at UNGA

UN-LyonpoDamchoDorji- The Home Minister, Damcho Dorji, while delivering Bhutan’s Statement at the 69th Session of the Session of United Nations General Assembly, said efforts to reform the Security Council remain frozen in a deadlock.

He said the countries cannot allow the absence of the UN Security Council to obstruct progress indefinitely, especially in the crucial area of peace and security.

The UN Security Council has been in a deadlock for more than two years due to the veto by Russia and China.

UN Security Council is one of the six organs of the United Nations. Its main objective is to maintain international peace and security. It has five permanent members- China, France, Russia, United Kingdom and United States.

A veto by a permanent member prevents adoption of a proposal, even if it has received the required votes.
