Leachate from Memelhakha landfill worrying environmentalists

Leachate-MemelakhaLeachate from Memelhakha landfill site in Thimphu is worrying environmentalists. Leachate is a liquid that drains from a landfill. It is considered toxic and can contaminate ground water and rivers.

A Researcher with the Royal Society for Protection of Nature, Dago Tshering, says leachate contains chemicals that are very harmful to both plants and animals.


Thimphu Thromde with support from JICA Bhutan has begun works to address the problem. “We got support from the Japanese government to work on the landfill site for three years,” said Thimphu Thrompon, Kinlay Dorjee.

He said one year of the project has already been completed.

A survey carried out by JICA had revealed that 30 tons of wastes are dumped at the Memelhakha landfill site every day
