Drug Appeal Programme launched nationwideThe Royal Bhutan Police began its campaign against illegal drugs trafficking all over the country, today.


Launching its Drug Appeal Programme, the police called for continued support of the general public in combating illegal trafficking of drugs in the country.

In Thimphu, the campaign was launched by the Education Minister and the Chief of Police.

Since December last year, the RBP has arrested 679 people in connection with illegal transaction and possession of narcotic drugs and controlled substances. Sixty five percent of the arrested are youth.

 

PhuentshoglingPling-DrugApeeal

Phuentshogling being the main port of entry for smuggling-in drugs and other controlled substances, appeal pamphlets were distributed among general public, taxi drivers and students.

The Narcotics Drug Law Enforcement Unit in Phuentshogling says, a total of 119 people were arrested for drug related cases this year alone, and 81 cases registered with the court.

 

Paro-DrugAppealParo

Within a year’s time, RBP arrested over 500 people in connection to drug related crimes. Police in Paro alone arrested around 80 people.

To seek public support, Police in Paro distributed appeal letters and messages were also read out to hundreds present at the launch.

 

Trashigang

Police in Trashigang today made an appeal to the public and youth to refrain from abusing drugs and getting involved in illegal drug business. The RBP in its appeal letter says, despite arresting large number of people and even conviction, many people still continue to smuggle and abuse drugs. Tgang-DrugAppeal

Apart from refraining from abusing and trading drugs, the police is also appealing public to provide information about the illegal drug business and abuse in the community.

Meanwhile, Police have now started checking the highways between Phuentshogling and Thimphu, Gelegphu and Trongsa, Sarpang and Wangdue and also Samdrup Jongkhar and Trashigang on a daily basis.

The Drug Appeal programme was also launched in other dzongkhags of the country.
