Proposal to revisit the local election laws

PunakhaDT-LocalElectionLawThe local leaders in Punakha proposed to do away with the party coordinators and door-to-door campaigns at local level since it caused problems in conducting fair elections. This was discussed at Dzongkhag Tshogdu yesterday.

During the meeting, local leaders said it caused more harm than good.

According to most of the gups, such practice like door-to-door campaign have caused more problems, while inefficient party coordinators instigate more division and misunderstanding among the people.

However, some disagreed, stating that a door-to-door campaign would help the locals make right choice of their leaders. This practice, they said, helps voters know their leaders better through personal interaction.

On the contrary, some of the election officials across the country had highlighted that door-to-door campaign is not requisite.

According to the Election Commission, during elections, dzongkhag, constituency, gewog and chiwog will have a coordinator each. But in practice, all registered members act as coordinators.

Meanwhile, the Dzongkhag Tshogdu decided to propose these suggestions with a request to revisit the laws.
