An unusual sighting, this time in Monggar

An unusual sighting of Vulture in Monggar. For the first time, a Himalayan vulture or Himalayan griffon vulture is seen in Monggar. The bird, which was never sighted before in the Dzongkhag, according to the villagers, has been living in a village for about two weeks now.

It has been living in and around Redaza in Monggar and it is a male. There were two vultures when it first came to the village.

A forestry official said the vulture could have lost its way while migrating.Normally such a bird lives in a very cold place at an altitude of over 2,000m to 4,000m. Monggar is just about 1,600m from sea level,” said Ngawang Dorji, a forest official.

“It is likely that this bird would have lost during migration. Since the bird is not under captivity, there is nothing we can do. There could be problems if someone is trying to capture the wild animals to keep it in captivity”

An ornithologist from Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Conservation and Environment in Bumthang said the vulture would leave soon in search of food.
