34NewHIVCasesA staggering 34 new HIV positive cases have been detected in the country in the last six months, from December 1 till the end of June. This takes the total of number of people detected with HIV in the country since 1993 to 380.

Of the 34 new People Living with HIV, two are minors, aged two and three. 25 of them are aged between 20 and 39, while remaining seven falls in the ages between 40 and 49. In terms of gender, 18 are male and 16 female.

The National HIV/AIDS and STIs Control Programme of the Department of Public Health updates HIV status every six months. It says 13 of the new cases were detected through the voluntary counseling and testing services, six through medical screening, five through construction site screening at the hydropower project health camps and nine through contact tracing.

The first HIV case in the country was detected in 1993.
