May 29, 2014

Na-Tourist-East-. The need to promote and increase tourism in the eastern region and also to reduce the government tax on tourism was highlighted at the National Assembly, yesterday.

The issue was submitted by the people of Monggar.

Of the 116,000 tourists that arrived in the country last year, only 3,700 visited the eastern dzongkhags. It means only 3.4 percent from the total visited the eastern dzongkhags.

The Economic Affairs Minister, Norbu Wangchuk, said as pledged by the government, they will increase the tourist arrivals by 20 percent in the East.

“Lack of connectivity was the reason why most tourists do not prefer to visit eastern dzongkhags.” Lyonpo said work to upgrade the road from Thimphu to Trashigang to a doubled-lane has already begun.

Dramedtse-Ngatshang MP, Ugyen Wangdi, said the cost and airfare for tourists travelling to the East should be reduced to encourage tourists to visit often.

The House directed the Economic Affairs Ministry and Tourism Council of Bhutan to look into the possibility of reducing daily tariff for the tourists visiting remote places in eastern dzongkhags.

Reduce the tariff? I hope the politician at the least understand why Tariff was introduced in the first place….well if the concern is just to increase the number of visitors to east…it is very very simple. Personally i believe the income or the impacts that the visitors make /contribute to the community is much more important than the mere head counts. What if tomorrow the tariff is reduced & every tom /dick & harry could come in.Are we ready of the pressure that Mass Tourism on the available resources.
