Bajo HSS admin building reduced to rubble

Feb 23, 2011

The main administrative building of the Bajo Higher Secondary School in Wangduephodrang has been razed to the ground by a fire last night.

The accident occurred at around 11.30 pm.

Police in Wangdue are still investigating the case, talking to the contractors and the electricians working on the building.

The cause is not known but the fire is believed to have started roof top, spreading rapidly engulfing the whole building within a short period of time.

It took the fire fighters including the police, the army, teachers and nearby residents more than three hours to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading to the academic buildings.

The electric rewiring of the building was underway and the fire is suspected to have started from an electric short circuit.

The school’s principal D.K Pradhan said “the work has been awarded to some electricians. They were working late. The fire must have started from the electric work.”

The two storied building houses the office of the principal and the vice-principal and the general office.

School equipment worth around Nu.2.5 million has also been lost in the fire.

D.K Pradhan said “we have lost all the documents, transfer certificates, admission registers, a lot of expensive school equipment, accounts registers, school development fund registers, all the expenditure files. They have all been reduced to ashes.”

The school’s principal assured that the fire will not hamper normal classes which will begin from tomorrow.

The Bajo Higher Secondary School was established in 1997. It has 600 students and 40 teachers.
