Assessment-damages-forest fire-TrashigangThe final assessment on the damages caused by the forest fire in Bartsham and Bidoong Gewogs in Trasigang says the fire completely gutted 21 houses and partially damaged four houses. Seven cowsheds and a kitchen were also damaged.

The fire that raged for three continuous days last month also destroyed about 11,000 acres of forest.

The fire also damaged around 4,000 fruit trees, including close to 3,000 hazelnut trees, in the two gewogs.

The fire damaged six community forests. The fire also damaged four rural water supply schemes and seven irrigation channels affecting over 200 households in the two gewogs. A farmer in Phongmed Gewog lost two cattle to the fire.

Meanwhile, the Royal Insurance Corporation branch office in Trashigang has paid over Nu.8, 00,000 as insurance to 12 households in Bidoong Gewog. The owners of the four other partially damaged houses will also receive the insurance.

Out of 14 houses gutted by the fire, two were not insured in Bidoong Gewog.

The insurance company is still in the process of finalising the payment for the owners of eight houses that was burnt down in Bartsham. Out of 10 houses gutted by the fire in Bartsham, only eight were insured.

The Dzongkhag administration is also planning to issue fruit saplings to the affected farmers as compensation.

The forest fire started on April 22 from Muktangkhar in Bartsham.
