Journalists and academicians learn climate change adaptation

Journalists and academicians learn climate change adaptionTo familiarise the journalists and academicians on climate change adaptation in a local context, a six-day conference was held at Lobesa CNR college in Punakha.

A facilitator of the workshop, Ron Feemster, who is also a Journalist in the United States said the workshop was also to provide better ideas to the journalists while writing climate change stories.

“Bhutan does not emit a lot of green house gases but it has the problems that come from other countries emitting gases that need to be clearly explained to the people that the world is going to change.” He said climate change will come to Bhutan. “… In fact climate change is here in Bhutan.”

He also added that climate change stories in rural communities in Bhutan can be related to worldwide climate change stories.

“I hope people especially covering rural communities in Bhutan will realise some of the changes that are happening here are much greater than a local story and will relate to worldwide climate event. That will possible to imply the stories in order to explain in the larger context of the story.”

The workshop saw discussion on the idea of mitigation and adaptation. Participants made field trips to some of the villages to explore the climate change stories.

“The training not only help us understand the complex issues and concept of climate change but also helped us  lot  picked up lot of journalist skills  to cover the science of climate change ,” said Bhutan Observer’s editor, Nidup Zangpo. He said the training will go a long way in refining Bhutanese journalist to cover climate change issues.
