Six confirmed dead in Zhemgang boat accident

Zhemgang-BoatCapsized(Update): Six people are now confirmed dead in the Zhemgang boat accident. The Search and Rescue team, comprising of Dzongkhag, Dungkhag and Gewog officials, along with the local communities, are looking for the six missing passengers.

The boat capsized around 1:30 yesterday afternoon in Mangdichhu at Rindibi under Phangkhar Gewog in Zhemgang.

It was carrying 18 people.

Of the six passengers rescued yesterday, four are being treated at the Yebilaptsa hospital. But they are said to be is stable condition.

Home and Cultural Affairs Minister Damcho Dorji is at the site.

All eighteen passengers are adults, four from Shinkhar Gewog and the rest from Bardo gewog.

The passengers work at a school construction in Langdurbee. They were on their way Rindibi to get cement for the school construction when the boat capsized.


Earlier, BBS ran a news on the boat service in Panthang sometime in 2012. In this report our reporter Surjaman Thapa talked to the boat operator and also to the people who use the boat service.

While the people were thankful for the boat service for it made travelling easy, they did raise safety concerns.
