The Paro Police confiscated 1,000 packets of cigarettes and 9,600 packets of chewing tobacco from a 25-year-old man, today.
The police had arrested the man at around 12:30am from Shaba for drunk driving. Police said the man had refused to stop at the checkpoints at Tanalum and Chhuzom while travelling from Phuentshogling. After police stopped him at Shaba, he was found to be in an inebriated state and was brought to the police station.
Upon inspection of his vehicle, the police found the smuggled items concealed under other goods. The man had intended to sell the tobacco products to other shopkeepers in Paro.
The tobacco products amount to over Nu. 2,00,000 in a resale value. The offender, who is from Samtse, is currently under police custody.
