The government must consider a long term measure as the increase in the average temperature surface of the planet is melting the Himalayas. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s (UNFCCC) Executive Secretary, Christiana Figueres, said melting Himalayas really raises the question on Bhutan’s hydropower.
She said much of water feeding the hydropower plants in the country is from the Himalayas. “That is something Bhutan needs to consider in its long term planning,” said Christiana Figueres at a press conference in Thimphu, today.
The head of the UNFCCC also said melting of Himalaya is eventually a threat both to drinking water and hydropower.
Christiana Figueres said Bhutan, being a smaller economy, cannot solve climate change on its own because Bhutan is not responsible at all for the global emission causing climate change.
“Bhutan is already and can continue to be inspiration and a role model for the world on how economies and different countries can address climate change while at the same time improving life of the citizen.”
Christiana Figueres also said through serious, responsible and transparent use of funds, more confidence will grow in Bhutan. She said this could lead to more likelihood of funds for Bhutan in responding to the challenges posed by climate change.
