PM: Bumthang dzongkhag has set an example

The Prime Minister Lyonchhoen Jigmi Y Thinley said Bumthang dzongkhag has set an example to other dzongkhags in the country by achieving remarkable progress in almost all the sectors. Lyonchhoen was speaking at the 10th Five Year Plan midterm review meeting in Bumthang yesterday.

Hundred percent electricity, telephone and mobile phone coverage has been achieved in all the four geogs of Bumthang dzongkhag. All the villages are an hour’s walking distance from the nearest road head.

In the Health sector too, the dzongkhag has achieved 100 percent accessibility to Basic Health Unit. Every household in the dzongkhag has sanitary latrines. Construction of an outreach clinic targeted in the 10th Five Year Plan is in good progress.

The dzongkhag’s achievement is 95 percent when it comes to accessibility to safe drinking water.

In the agriculture sector, over 40 kilometers of the total 47 kilometres of farm road targeted has been constructed. It has also constructed over 7 kilometers irrigation channel. The target is to construct 9 kilometres.

Under the Education Sector, the dzongkhag has achieved 92 percent in primary enrolment. Fifteen additional infrastructures were constructed in the middle Secondary Schools and 11 additional infrastructures were constructed in the community primary schools.

Two early childcare centres have been established and two non-formal education centres are being constructed in the dzongkhag. One primary school has been upgraded to a lower secondary school.

The dzongkhag has also constructed three community meeting halls and two suspension bridges have been completed. The dzongkhag also has carried out several other developmental works which were not included in the plan. The Prime Minister commended the efforts put in by the dzongkhag and geog officials.

Bumthang dzongkhag has four geogs with a population of over 16,000.
