Feb 17, 2011

His Majesty the King granted an audience to the Thrompon elects of Gelephu, Phuentsholing, Thimphu and Samdrup Jongkhar at the Tashichhodzong today.

Namgay, the Thrompon elect of Gelephu is a former Dzongda. Tsheten Dorji, the Thrompon of Phuentsholing Thromde is a businessman and Kinlay Dorjee, the Thrompon elect of Thimphu Thromde is the former General Manager of the Customer Care Division of the Bhutan Power Corporation. Karma Sherub Thobgyal, the Thrompon of Samdrup Jongkhar is a former police officer.

The recently elected Thrompons sought an audience to pay respects to His Majesty the King and to seek guidance as they prepare to take office as the nation’s first elected Thrompons.

Granting an audience to the Thrompon elects, His Majesty said elected representatives and officials must have a special commitment- to a greater purpose, to a just and good society, to the nation’s better future. Any person seeking elected office without such a commitment, His Majesty said is actually pursuing personal glory and power.

His Majesty advised the Thrompons to be mindful of the mistakes made in the past in Bhutanese towns and in countries similar to Bhutan. For a country that entered late into modernisation and as a young democracy, His Majesty said there is much to learn from the mistakes of nations that trod this path before us.

His Majesty said we would be foolish to disregard history and reproduce them. His Majesty added that the lessons for growing Thromdes in Bhutan were abundant in the challenges facing so many cities around the world and in the immediate neighbourhood.

His Majesty reminded the Thrompons that they had sought the people’s support when running for office. He said in office their complete allegiance and dedication should be to the welfare, convenience and comfort of the people.
