Zhemgang Dzongkhag should work towards alleviating poverty, says PM

Prime Minister Lyonchhoen Jigmi Y Thinley said poverty rate of Zhemgang Dzongkhag should be brought down to 15 percent by the end of the 10th Five Year Plan. Currently, Zhemgang Dzongkhag has the highest poverty rate in the country at 52.9 percent.

The Prime Minister said that it is the main objective of the 10th Five Year Plan to alleviate poverty. Lyonchhoen Jigmi Y Thinley said that Zhemgang dzongkhag has one of the highest poverty rates compared to the other dzongkhags.

Road connectivity, the Prime Minister Lyonchhoen Jigmi Y Thinley said is one of the key measures to alleviate poverty. In Zhemgang Dzongkhag only four, out of eight geogs, are connected with road. In the tenth plan, there are plans to construct around 240 kilometres of road. But so far only about 27 kilometres have been constructed. Loynchhen however promised 100 percent road connectivity by the end of the planned period to the people of Zhemgang.

The dzongkhag will also receive 100 percent electricity coverage by the end of the plan. Currently, only two geogs are electrified. On other achievements Lyonchhoen said the dzongkhag is on track. The dzongkhag has achieved over 97 percent water supply coverage and 97 percent net primary children enrollment. About 70 percent of the dzongkhag has been covered by mobile network.

Within the past two years, the dzongkhag has achieved over 74 percent of the planned activities. But the overall 10th Five Year Plan achievement is only 27.7 percent. Prime Minister said local leaders should work hard to achieve all the planned activities within planned period.

Zhemgang Dzongkahg has eight geogs with total population of more than 20,000 people.
