‘I will leave it up to you’, says PM on Dungkhag relocation

pmThe final decision now lies in the hands of the people. People of Chhuzanggang, Tareythang, Umling and Serzhong Gewogs in Gelegphu Dungkhag will have to decide whether to shift the Dungkhag to Chhuzanggang located over the Moa river or not. The Prime Minister who made this promise during the election campaign last year said the government will let the locals decide on the matter.

Lyonchhen said if the Dungkhag is relocated, the people would not have to face hardships, travelling across the Mao river, especially during rainy season.

“It seems some people have doubt that if Dungkhag gets relocated to this side, the bridge over Mao river will not be constructed. But it is not like that. We have pledged to blacktop the road and build the bridge.

“While blacktopping will begin soon, bridge will have to depend on the availability of funds. But if the Dungkhag is here, there will be developments in terms of health facility, education, security and business opportunities,” Lyonchhen said.

The home minister, Damcho Dorji, said Dungkhag was shifted to Gelephu mainly because of the security reason. “As of now there are Dzongkhag, Thromde and Dungkhag all together because of which the service delivery in the Gewogs is not so efficient. The population here is also enough for a Dungkhag, which would prove beneficial to all.”

But, the people have different opinion on the relocation. It was decided that the issue will be further discussed by the people in the Gewogs and then the decision will be submitted to the Gross National Happiness Commission.
