Timber inaccessibility troubles people in Paro

Paro-Windstorm-TimberPeople in Paro say it is getting difficult to get timber to roof their houses. Over 180 houses were damaged in Paro, one of the worst affected dzongkhags by the December windstorm.

A total of about Nu.2 million was paid as insurance claims by the Royal Insurance Corporation of Bhutan to those affected by windstorm across the country.

Sharpa Gewog Gup, Kuenga, said that he has told the people that it may take a while for the permits to be approved. “I have asked them to get it from those who have excess timber and start the renovations. If there is rain or snow, the houses will be further damaged”

Buying timber from Sawmills is another solution, but an expensive one. The Dzongkhag Forestry officials said this is a special request made by the people and they are discussing about it.

According to the rules, rural timber permit is given to a household once in 25 years and once in 12 years for renovations and extensions.
