Winter vegetable production is one of the programmes initiated by the Department of Agriculture. And its objective is to achieve self sufficiency in terms of vegetable production in the country.

The promotion of local vegetables in the country began last year. This was initiated to reduce the import of vegetables from borders in a wake of rupee crisis.

The Agriculture department has come up with numerous activities to boost winter vegetable production. Has the department been successful in fulfilling its endeavors? What are the challenges faced by the farmers while marketing their produces?  How far is Bhutan gearing towards achieving self-sufficiency in vegetable production? And what more should be done? These issues will be deliberated at length later in our news hour segment.

For discussion, we had in our news studio, Kinley Tshering, the Chief Horticulture Officer from Department of Agriculture, Leki Tenzin, the Deputy Chief Marketing Officer of Department of Agricultural Marketing and Cooperatives and Khampa, the former consultant of Freshveg.
