31Kagyud Moenlam Chenmo begins in BodhgayaThe 31st Kagyud Moenlam Chenmo began in Bodhgaya in the Indian State of Bihar, Friday.

More than 10,000 devotees including monks, nuns, and pilgrims from around 30 countries have gathered to receive blessings from His Eminence the 17th Karmapa, Ogyen Thrinley Dorje, head of the Karma Kagyud School in Tibetan Buddhism. The Kagyud Moenlam is a major international prayer festival held annually in Bodhgaya, the most important and revered site for Buddhists around the world.

As a special event in the history of the Kagyud Moenlam, His Eminence the 17th Karmapa himself will perform a Vajra dance called the Garchen Tshechu.

At a press conference, His Eminence said, “We convene the Kagyud Moenlam here in Bodhgaya because it is the most sacred place for all Buddhists. We gather here, many of us coming from all over India, and from around the world, to pray together for world peace and for a better future. As you know, this is the 31st Kagyud Moenlam and we gather here to pray together for the same purpose.”

By coming to Bodhgaya, where one feels close to Lord Buddha, His Eminence added, “our own lives will improve, especially, since we’re doing our utmost to pray for a better future for the world.”

The history of the Kagyud Moenlam dates back to 15th century Tibet where the 7th Karmapa, Chodrak Gyatsho, established the tradition of great prayer gatherings for the benefit of all sentient beings.

The Kagyud Moenlam Chenmo was instituted in 1983 in Bodhgaya by two great teachers of the Drukpa Kagyud tradition of Tibetan Buddhism: Kalu Rinpoche and Bokar Rinpoche.

The 17th Karmapa revived the Kagyud Moenlam in 2004, and shaped it into the international event that it is today.

The Moenlam Chenmo ends on Janaury 16.

    Bokar rinpoche and kalu rinpoche are not drukpa kagyud masters, they are from karma kagyud and shangpa kagyud… BBS, please give correct information to the people. dont make them more ignorant by giving false informations

    BBS should be addressing Gyelwa Karmapa with a salutation “His Holines the 17th Karmapa” instead of “His Eminence the 17th Karmapa”. Plus Kalu and Bokar Rimpoche are from Karmagyu lineage not a Drukpa Kagyu.

  4. Our Bhutanse masters are not as popular as karmapa, not wealthy , not popular and no interest to the outside world. Not interest in HH or HE . When one has no realization or well-learned, those names become lebels pasted on the papers. In bhutan we have many many qualified masters for we need not to find from outside the country. But not well-known to the public too. We must be aware and get known how our own great masters are still living and incomparable with outside lamas. Please take more interest in our own great master without wasting money and energy.

  5. The reporter was indeed in bodhgaya and all he could do is to compile a wrong report, what a great work done by the one who compiled this story with false informations, i dont see a reason why he was there in bodhgaya, if all he wanted to do was to give wrong info to the readers, i agree with the other people who commented earlier, Bokar and kalu rinpoche are not drukpa kagyu masters. get that corrected BBS!!!

  7. Thank you and well done BBS for the news. At least you are bring news from out which is good for our people. Without mistake is excellent but with mistake you will learn more. You should come out with such news which is related to our culture. I am happy with that. If I am not mistake I hear HH 16th Karmapa used to live in Bhutan and blessed our country and our people.

    Dear BBS Editors:

    Thanks for the wonderful coverage of the Kagyu Monlam opening.

    To be consistent with the spelling on the Kagyu Monlam Official website, we would appreciate if you can kindly accommodate the following spelling changes:

    Kagyud Moenlam -> Kagyu Monlam
    Garchen Tshechu -> Garchen Tsechu
    Chodrak Gyatsho -> Chodrak Gyatso

    Sincerely Yours,

    Dear BBS,
    Just for the sake of the general uninformed public, in the interest of balanced perspective, there is another Kagyu Menlom Chenmo and another His Holiness Gyalwa Karmapa Thinley Thaye Dorje. Your report makes it seems like this is the only defacto Kagyu Menlom Chenmo held and raises many eyebrows about the intentions of the coverage.
    H.H. Gyalwa Karmapa Thinley Thaye Dorje has been recognised by the highest Karma Kagyu master Kunzig Shamarpa, the historical throne holder of the Karma Kagyu after the Gyalwa Karmapa, in keeping with Karma Kagyu traditions free from any and all political considerations.
    Their Holiness’s the Gyalwa Karmapa Thinley Thaye Dorje and Kunzig Shamarpa have been received and felicitated by Their Majesties the fourth and fifth Druk Gyalpos and His Holiness the Je Khenpo, in Tashichhodzong, officially and privately, on more than a few important and august occasions such as the Royal Coronation and so on.
    Without splitting historical and spiritual hairs further, we aspire that BBS devotes enough attention to balanced perspectives to present a more holistic picture of state of affairs as they are.
    Thank you,
    Disciple of the Je Khenpo and Gyalwa ShaMarNak (The Red and Black Hat Karmapas)

      Hi Phuntshok,
      I am sorry to reply, but it would be a sad thing to try to mislead some general uninformed persons by your point.
      It isn’t an issue writing whether Ogyen Trinley Dorje, or Trinley Thaye Dorje as Head of Karma Kagyu,or whichever Monlam Chenno, because both of them were independently enthroned as the 17th Karmapas by their respective disciples and are actively leading the roles. H.H. Trinley Thaye Dorje was recognised by H.E. Shamarpa(who got split from the three other Karmapa Regents) while H.H. Ogyen Trinley Dorje recognised by H.E. Tai Situ and H.E. Gyaltsab. There are many other Rinpoches in more than one form, like Dujom Rinpoche, Khamtrul Rinpoche, etc. So no basis for finger-pointing to politics either. One will only understand clearly to whom s/he should believe, through the History,prophecies, present acts, and basis for recognition (how,what,etc) of the 2 Karmapas. For eg. in fact, Ogyen Trinley Dorje’s name appeared in the Prophecy by Guru Rinpoche, Terton Chogyur Lingpa, the 16th karmapa, etc. And there are many other evidences based upon which MAJORITY of Buddhists,(or Kamtsang Kagyu) world believe him.
      Thank You

    Yet bbs fails to make the changes! Still drukpa kagyud instead of karma kagyu, needs to do his homework well!

    Dear Mei Mei,

    Let us not get into historical and spiritual hair splitting. There are many documents on both sides that present their versions of history and spiritual prophesy. The question is about balanced (which does not mean side with any) perspectives. And do not prejudge that you have a “MAJORITY” just because silent disciples of Gyalwa Karmapa and Shamarpa do not have “publicity teams”, and so on lol. In fact, you make the issue of recognition of a high lama seem like a political voting process lol

    My supplications and respects to all lamas and monks … irrespective of their sects, lineage or alliances …

      Dear Funtsok,
      “MAJORITY” is not the politics always. I think the people around the world would not be practicing DHARMA BLINDLY. So is the cases with majority of the high/enlightened rinpoches who believe and support H.H. the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa, irrespective of their orders or lineages.
